You do not need forty matching canisters. You need six to ten, for the things that actually justify decanting: bags that will not stand up, bulk items, and anything where you need to see the level at a glance.

What matters in a pantry container

The seal, not the shape. A container that does not close airtight is a bin with a lid. Flour and cereal go stale; anything sugary attracts pantry moths.

Square beats round. Round containers waste roughly 20% of the shelf between them. On a deep shelf that is an entire extra container’s worth of space.

One-handed opening. You will be holding a measuring cup with the other hand. Lids that need two hands get left off, and then the seal is irrelevant.

Stackable with the lid on. Check that the lid is designed to take the weight of the container above it — many are not, and the stack slides.
